Praise and Worship Services
Worship is the heart of our life together at First
Presbyterian Church. In worship we direct our attention towards God
and His grace given to us through Jesus Christ, and are renewed for
our life and service in the world.
The word worship comes from Old English roots, meaning "to create
honor and worthiness." Of course, we don't create God's honor, but we
do devise ways which honor God and bespeak His worthiness. As
Presbyterians our worship is centered on God's Holy Word. In the
reading of the Scriptures and the proclamation of the Scriptures
through the sermon, we focus our attention on God's gracious acts of
salvation, culminating in His most gracious act in sending Jesus
Christ His Son. In Jesus we encounter the Incarnate and Living God
and discover that we are loved and forgiven, and transformed to be
His disciples in the world. Worship grounds us in the reality of
God's presence and activity in the world, and recenters us to our
calling as God's agents of reconciliation.
Our worship at First Presbyterian is mainly traditional in style,
though we are working to bring in more contemporary elements with
the goal of achieving a "blended" format, employing the best of both
traditional and contemporary styles. Yet we remember that in
Christian worship, style is always subordinate to substance, and we
believe while the Gospel message is unchanging, methods for sharing
the Gospel must always be flexible and able to speak to a new
generation.
Worship at First Presbyterian begins at 10:45 a.m.
